Antechamber

This is a rare glimpse of the rooms of the attic of the palace. The attic of the South-East Pavilion of the Secretaries of State, in which the present antechamber is situated, is currently unoccupied as the rooms are being restored to their former glory.

This antechamber presents an example of a fireplace positioned in a corner of the room but still parallel to the main wall. This bizarre setup is in fact not uncommon in the palace of Versailles.

As for the antechambers themselves, they are maybe the epitome of a room belonging to a rich mansion or palace from the past. Who can afford nowadays to have at its disposal such rooms (sometimes vast and beautiful) and not making them their living room, bedroom or dining room? Note that a lot of theses antechambers (generally the second one if you had two) were in fact used as a dining room. In the first antechamber stood your servants and waited the visitors of less importance.

    1. You're very welcomed indeed!
The folding seat you see here is indeed from the period (17th century) and had quite a life! I'll be more than happy to give you a tour of those rooms when completed and will try to accommodate your own rooms in the King's Pavilion even better. Regards!

    2. Being so high up under the roof, this apartments is not very noisy despite it partially facing the street. This apartments is composed of four main rooms (plus passages, cupboards and small cabinets), of which only this one is currently partially restored. A VIP already chosen will occupy these rooms, with the permission of His Grace.

  4. Unoccupied rooms in the attic? It might be just the perfect place to store some boxes or old books or whatnot.
I'm always looking for some storage space!
    Is it climate controlled?

    1. I would not recommend to store in those rooms items sensitive to temperature or humidity are some of the windows are less than perfectly permeable to air and even rain in case of wind!
But we're working hard on making those rooms fit to live in as soon as possible.

    1. Thank you Monica!

Alas, those rooms are quite small and will be privately occupied as soon as restored. But I hope to show you some more pictures of them to give you an idea of what the lodgings of a courtier could look like during the Ancient Regime.
